Marriage Proposal with Fireworks in Orange County by The YES Girls

oc marriage proposal with fireworks
Brooks booked his custom proposal ideas package back in 2016. But then with the holidays and the business that naturally comes with that season, he decided to put everything on hold for a bit. Then, after the New Year we circled back around and started moving on the couple’s big day! Brooks knew he wanted fireworks – not sparklers or ground work, but true, over the top Fourth of July style fireworks! So we brainstormed the custom decor that would add thoughtfulness to his proposal, but wouldn’t detract from the ‘wow factor’ of the fireworks. Ultimately, we decided that we should create a structure out of umbrellas. On their first date, Brooks and Amber went for a walk on the beach and it started raining – so umbrellas and rain have had a special place in their relationship! We added in some twinkle lights to give the “rain effect”, and some beautiful calligraphy inside jokes hanging from some of the umbrellas too.

Tips for Proposing During the Holidays

We saw lots of proposals over Thanksgiving last week, and with Christmas right around the corner, there are a lot of engagement announcements that will start popping up within the next few weeks.  There’s something so romantic about proposing over the holidays, so if you’re feeling the love lately and thinking about popping the question, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

1.  Take advantage of Christmas traditions and activities.
Using her favorite Christmas activities in the proposal is the perfect way to not only ensure that she’s enjoying herself, but also that she won’t suspect that anything is going on.  Chopping down the tree, ice skating, and gingerbread house competitions are all super cute ways to propose without her catching on ahead of time.

2.  Make the moment extra sentimental.
Does she have a favorite Christmas memory?  Take her back to her favorite childhood spot, or make the Christmas dinner her Grandma used to make when she was little.  Tapping into those warm, sappy feelings with make the moment extra romantic and oh so memorable!

3.  Include family and friends.
Christmas is definitely a time to be surrounded by loved ones, so if she’s close to her family, why not include them in the proposal?  It will be a moment that everyone would be happy to be a part of, and that she would love to have them in on.

4.  Don’t propose on the actual holiday.
While the season of Christmas is warm and cozy, the actual day itself can be stressful if there are many places to go and things to do.  Also, the holiday is about much more than your engagement, and it wouldn’t be fair to take all the attention for yourself when all family members should be visiting.

5.  Don’t get carried away with the eggnog.
This goes for all proposals… whether the nerves are getting the best of you, or you’re having a little too much fun, save the alcohol until the post-proposal celebration.  Slurring your words and wobbling on one knee is not the best way to get a “YES!”

Common Proposal Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

proposal mistakes Mistake 1: Asking Without a Ring

This almost always will come off as a spur of the moment decision to propose, which is really only romantic in Lifetime movies.  Picking out a ring symbolizes much more than just a piece of jewelry for her to wear to show she’s off limits, it displays the effort you are willing to put into her for the rest of your lives together.  If you’re thinking about proposing but you aren’t sure when, it’s always a good idea to buy the ring early.  Then it will be ready when the perfect time comes!

proposal mistakes Mistake 2: Not Considering Her in the Process

The day of the proposal is all about you as a couple, however if you plan the entire event around your likes, she’ll probably wonder who the proposal is really for.  If you plan to propose in front of an entire stadium of people and she hates being the center of attention, she’ll be mortified rather than actually enjoying the proposal.  Vice versa, if you know she loves extravagant acts of love, but hardly put any effort into the proposal, she’ll probably be left wondering if you really even know her at all.

proposal mistakes Mistake 3: Drinking too Much Before

We get it… nerves can run pretty high before a proposal.  However, drinking is not the confidence booster needed in that situation.  A glass of wine leading up to the event can be romantic, however taking shots or swigging a flask might make for a pretty sloppy and unromantic proposal.  If you really start feeling the nerves, think back over the course of your relationship.  Look at old pictures, read old letters or messages, and remember why you are taking this step.  Most of all, remember that it’s just a moment between you and your significant other.  If you’re confident in your relationship, all doubt and fear should fade away.

proposal mistakes Mistake 4: Being too Cliche

There’s nothing wrong with flowers and candles, however try to avoid the cliche “bed of rose petals” proposal, and add more personal touches.  Does she have an exotic favorite flower? Does she love a specific sports team?  Adding thoughtful touches to your marriage proposal is the perfect way to add loads of romance without being cheesy.

proposal mistakes Mistake 5: Having Nothing to Say

…besides “Will you marry me?”  While those four words are ultimately the most important, when it comes to a marriage proposal, ladies want to hear the reasons why you finally decided to pop the question.  No matter how reserved you are on a daily basis, your proposal should be the one time you speak up and share your feelings!  If you know you’ll probably draw a blank in the moment, there’s nothing wrong with writing a poem or love letter to read before getting down on one knee! In fact, it will be a romantic memento she’ll love to have and re-read over and over again.
