Date Night Is… a Chance to Spend a Night Under the Stars
No, we don’t own a telescope. We can’t name all of the constellations with our eyes closed. And we can’t navigate with nothing but the North Star. But, if you’re anything like us, Astronomy still holds at least a notion of romanticism for you too. So why not make a date night of it?
Your best bet for a night under the stars is to make your plans according to an upcoming celestial event, that way you’ll have something specific to look at or for as you spend your night outdoors. (You can see a full listing for 2013 and beyond at SeaSky.org.) We’d highly recommend the Perseids Meteor Shower that’s scheduled to hit us in mid-August.
Now that you know what you’re going to see, the next step is finding somewhere to see it. Think of a place outside of any major city where the lights from the streets won’t obstruct your view. Parks are a great choice, and a great excuse to combine your stargazing with a good, old-fashioned campout. And be sure to pack the essentials: a blanket to sit on, another to cozy up in, bug spray, hot cocoa or some other beverage, some snacks, a spare layer, and an umbrella. (Speaking of an umbrella, keep an eye on the weather as your night approaches.)
Even if you can’t manage to catch some event, cuddling under the stars is a great way to spend a date night. Grab a star chart app (for iPhone or Android) or just make up your own constellations together.
Now, doesn’t that just scream romance?
