One of the most commonly asked questions we get as proposal planners is how to find the right photographer to capture your marriage proposal or event. What many people don’t realize is that when searching for your photographer, it’s important to first know which photography style best fits your event. There are four main styles that we typically see in the photographers that we work with, and within each style, we have our go-to’s to fit every budget and need!
TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY STYLES:
Dreamy- Dreamy photographers are known for their creamy white hues, lifted shadows (low contrast), soft lighting, and “living in a dream” style. The dreamy style is probably the most sought after style in 2019 when it comes to marriage proposals.
Moody- Moody photographers naturally drift towards warmer hues, darker colors, deeper shadows, and have all-over higher contrast in their photos. The moody styles tends to lend a sensual, intense feelings towards photographs. While this style may not be right for ALL proposals, we have seen SO many gorgeous proposals where the moody style is PERFECT. Here’s a hint: take a look at her Instagram and Pinterest and the accounts she follows before booking a moody photographer. If she likes the dark-filter look, a moody photographer may be right for you!
Natural light- While many other photographers may use natural light for their photos, specific natural light photographers focus mostly on timing of day to get the perfect photos. Not to be confused with the dreamy style, these photos will likely have bolder colors and normal-to-high contrast. Details in the sky will not be lost in over-exposed highlights. Remember to consider location and timing when booking a natural light photographer… an indoor proposal or a proposal after dark may not be ideal for these photographers to produce their absolute best work!
Film- If you’ve been on Instagram lately, you’ve likely seen a film photographer or two floating around. These photographers produce photos with a very distinct look, mostly because they are shooting with a DSLR… they’re shooting with a film camera. That’s right, the film cameras that were used before DSLR became a thing. Film has made a comeback, and for amazing reason. Film has a magic way of making everything look like time has stood still- like you’re standing in the event, watching it unfold. Film doesn’t allow the photographer to snap endless photos and choose the best one later… Instead, it takes skill to capture the perfect shots as their happening. We absolutely LOVE the look of film for proposals, but keep in mind that the film will have to be sent off to a lab to be processed and, depending on the lab, may take up to a few weeks to get back.
