Valentine’s Day Gifts for Our Men

Today’s blog is for the ladies. Our men may not love or truly care about Valentine’s Day, therefore, it makes gift shopping a little tricky.  However, they still deserve love.  We can’t just buy them flowers and chocolates so what should we do?

These are some budget-friendly, man-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts that we’ve heard go over well with the guys. These ideas are just something extra you can include in your Valentine’s Day celebration.

ss_BKS043067 1) Buy his favorite non-chick flick movie (unless he is one of the few guys out there that like chick flicks).

2) Plan a day filled with his favorite activity, whether it’s snowboarding, dirt bike riding, golfing, or fishing.  It doesn’t matter if you’re good, it’s about him, and that you love him enough to try it.

3) A fresh home-cooked meal never gets old. Men love their food. Put together his favorite meal, and make it “the works”

with 5 courses.  Incorporate everything from his drink of choice to his favorite steak sauce.

4) Spa day for your man.  Set up a calm, romantic atmosphere at home and loosen up his muscles…with a massage.  Maybe he would even enjoy soaking in a bubble bath first, like Chandler from Friends! If your man’s love language is physical touch, this is a simple, effective way to say “I love you.”

Any cute ideas you’ve done or heard of in the past? Please share!

Memories in Balloons

Eric and Katie dated four years before he proposed, which meant he had hundreds of memories with Katie. Their first date was on her birthday, so he brought Katie a dozen balloons and a chick flick movie she loved; he consulted her best friend who matched them together. Smart move. She just loved that he brought her balloons because it reminder her of birthdays as a kid. It’s now tradition for Eric to buy Katie balloons on holidays. So this is how the proposal went…

We thought incorporating their tradition, aka balloons, would be a perfect touch. Eric filled her room with hundreds of pink and green balloons (her favorite colors). On a note, he wrote a memory or a reason why he loved her and put one inside or tied to every balloon. When she finally popped most of the balloons, she could see a picture frame on her bed. Inside the frame was an empty pink balloon and a note. The note read, “Will you make this moment another unforgettable memory? Katie, I love you.” That’s when John came in her door, holding the last balloon with her engagement ring tied to the string. She was on cloud 9!

This is a great anniversary idea too. When your sweetheart gets home, having a room decked out in balloons with little memory notes attached will be a complete surprise!

Thoughtful, Budget-Friendly Valentine’s Day Gifts

We of course love sharing proposal ideas but we are also suckers for cute date/gift ideas. No girl will turn down a beautiful bouquet of flowers, but why not throw in a little extra this Valentine’s day?  The best part is, it won’t empty your wallet! Here are a few Valentine gifts…

98171915_b07b308a32 1. Put together a slideshow of your favorite photos and songs to compliment the memories.  You can add your own commentary or some written words in between photos to declare your love.

2. Married? Instead of buying her a chick flick, why don’t you watch your own? Make dinner and enjoy eachother’s company while you two watch your wedding or engagement video.

3. A spa day is always a perfect gift but if you can’t afford it, no worries, create your own spa.  Set her up with a nice bubble bath, surrounded by flower petals, candles and some mimosa. Let her just relax and when she is done, invite her downstairs for dinner or perhaps a massage to complete her spa day.

4.  If you plan on getting her flowers, instead of just sending a card, attach a note for every flower you send her. On each note, write one thing you love about her. The more specific the better!

5. Find her To-Do list and take care of it for the day. Pick up her groceries, fill up her gas tank, bathe her dog, wash her car, bring her favorite coffee/tea drink, pack her a lunch for work, etc. You get the picture.  Leave little notes everywhere for her to find when you complete her To-Do list. For example, if you picked up her favorite drink, leave a post-it note on her drink cup.

More thoughtful proposals, dates, and gift ideas to come.

Grow Old With You

To say this couple, Chris and Jen, have a fun-loving relationship is an understatement. This proposal captivates one of Jen’s favorite things to do (sing) while playing into her creative, boisterous side.  We love romance and it definitely can come in the form of humor.  It was important to Jen that her family and friends were involved, so we made sure they were.  This proposal is inspired by her favorite movie “The Wedding Singer.” Are you remembering when Adam Sandler sings “I wanna grow old with you” to Drew Barrymore on the plane? Oh yes, this took a lot of guts on Chris’ end.

Chris planned a dinner with Jen’s family and friends at her favorite Italian restaurant in Rye Brook, NY.  In the middle of enjoying dinner, Chris stood up on his chair, with a microphone in hand, as if to make an announcement.  With all eyes on Chris, he began singing “I Want to Grow Old With You” to Jen! Oh and it gets better; her lovely friends and family slowly joined in one by one singing along with Chris. As he sang, each family member started passing flowers down the table to Jen.  At the ending verse, he sang it solo; he got down on one knee, held her hand, handed her the final flower to complete her bouquet, and slipped on her beautiful engagement ring!  Easy to say, she was in shock but she said, “Yes!”

How To Avoid Proposal Day Arguments

This may be a surprise to some, but it is not uncommon for couples to have little tiffs on the day their sweetheart plans to propose.  In most cases, gentlemen want everything to go perfectly and according to plan; his girlfriend somehow begins to deviate from his plan resulting in… you guessed it, an argument.

Tips to Avoid Pre-Pr0posal Arguments

rejection

1. Be Flexible: Men, you rightfully want the proposal to be perfect, but be aware your girlfriend may not do everything exactly the way you pictured it. It’s vital you give yourself (and her) some leeway time.  For example, if you made reservations at your proposal destination but she is running late or isn’t in the mood (which is understandably frustrating to you), DO NOT get annoyed and mad at here. It’s like mom always said, “Kill them with kindness.” She is not going to change her mind or be in a joyful mood if she feels you’re mad at her.

Instead, sweetly ask her if she would do this for you and trust you on this. You do not need to give her details but explain you made plans and you know she will enjoy them.  You are not blowing the proposal by striking her curiosity about your mystery plans. It’s better she is excited you made plans than having her upset when you pop the question!

2. Get Creative: Along with being flexible, get creative.  If she strays away from your plan find a way to get her back on track in a non-confrontational way. For example, you need her to “go for a walk” on the beach but she says she doesn’t feel like walking, make up an excuse. Examples: You just got a text from a friend and you would really love it if you could say “hi”, you found a beautiful spot on the beach and want to show it to her, you dropped your sunglasses earlier (just hide them in your pocket) and want her help looking for them, etc.  You get the point. Create a reason for her to go with you.

3. Be Prepared:  Think about where you are going and have her wearing the proper attire.  If you’re going to be outside, make sure she has a jacket, scarf, etc. so she is willing to go outside.  Preparing her from head to toe for the evening is a must.

4. Calm Her Nerves: It’s completely normal to be nervous. However, she won’t understand why you are acting different. Because we are females she may start to question if you’re upset, mad, frustrated or (even go this extreme) not into her.  Compliments are golden on proposal day! Even if you’re nervous take time to tell her how much you love her and reassure her, so she doesn’t start doubting. If you usually have a sense of humor, throw around a few funny comments. You may not be able to calm your nerves but you can certainly calm hers. Now you’ve avoided a potential argument. Voila!

You can’t always predict your gal’s mood but you can certainly have an amazing, non-argumentative proposal day! Good Luck!!!

Dancing Away

First off, I need to say “Happy Birthday” to my beautiful mom!  You are the greatest and I love you!  If anyone loves dancing as much as my mom does, then you’ll adore this idea.  This was a proposal done last Valentine’s Day 2009 and with upcoming Valentine’s proposals on the way, there is no better time to share this story!

Lindey’s ultimate dream is to own her own dance studio.  Matthew being the wonderful boyfriend he is, takes dance lessons with Lindey to participate in something she loves. We just thought that this was too cute, so we tuned into that thoughtful side of Matthew and created a proposal inspired by her dream.  Matthew scheduled a private dance lesson with their dance instructor for a Valentine’s Day gift to Lindey.  To add to the romantic gift, he even asked her best friend to help pick out a new, cute dancing dress to wear that evening. The instructor, knowing Matthew was proposing, choreographed a dance move where Lindey spun away from him during their dance.  Later in their session, the instructor excused herself for a minute but encouraged them to practice while she was gone.

Matthew and Lindey started to dance, but this time when she spun away, Matthew dropped down on one knee to propose and completely surprised her when she turned back around!

When the instructor left, she was actually getting the camera ready to capture some photos of the proposal!  Oh and the song Matthew chose for them to dance to was the song Lindey wanted to dance to at their wedding.  Precious!

A Life Size Snow Globe Proposal

Rick and Steph are such a sweet couple. Just listening to him describe her was so endearing. When he told us her favorite gift he’s given her was a snow globe that said “I Love You” inside, the perfect idea just clicked. They planned a weekend away to visit friends so he took that opportunity to propose.

When Steph was busy out shopping with her girlfriends, Rick was blowing up a life-size, inflatable Christmas snow globe; the ones you see on your neighbors front lawns. He cut out the Christmas figures inside the snow globe so he could get inside. Yes, that is right, he was a human snow globe. Rick squeeze inside the globe and his buddy taped the incision right before Steph returned.

When she walked into the room, she stepped into a winter wonderland. It was filled with hundreds of white balloons and candles all centered around Rick, in the snow globe. There he was, on one knee, dressed to the nines, ring in hand, and holding a sign, “I Love You, Will You Marry Me?”

Awww…I just love it. The most important part was that Steph loved it. She immediately burst into happy tears.  Rick had his friend hide to capture some photos and of course, quickly undo the tape so Rick could put the beautiful ring on his fiancee’s finger! The rest of the evening was celebrating with their beloved friends. What a proposal!

A Warm Cup of Joe

Talk about using a daily habit to your advantage; this proposal is not only original but adorably romantic. As a Starbucks lover myself, I was totally into turning her morning routine into something romantic. You can never go wrong starting off your day with a cup of joe!

Lindsay, John’s now fiancée, went by Starbucks every morning before work. She loved her coffee and never went to work without her cup in hand. Lucky for John, he was able to convince Lindsay’s boss to give her the day off. Lindsay however had no idea; she went to Starbucks as usual in the morning.

starbucks_cup starbuckscup copy final

When she picked up her coffee at the bar she saw something different written on her cup. John had given the barista a label to put on her cup (where the “inspirational quote” is located). It simply said, “Lindsay, you are the love of my life. Will you be my wife? Love, John.” John came around the corner with a dozen yellow tulips (her fav) and proposed in front of the Starbucks crowd! She had the best coffee of her life, a day off work and spent the rest of the day with her new fiancé.

Hopefully this encourages you to look at your future fiancées little habits and turn that thing she loves into unforgettable!

A Decade of Diamonds

It is amazing in just ten years how much engagement rings have changed! The millenium showcased rings with a simple classic design. They were stunning, and recalled the “less is more” concept.  In 2010, however, I think it is all about the bling, with groupings of diamonds often encircling a center stunner. Even though diamonds are timeless no matter what the shape or size;  princess, cushion and emerald cuts have become top contenders. Pave, halo and split band style rings add to their popularity. Watch for more colored diamond center stones a la Carrie Underwood’s yellow, show-stopping gem.

Classic Solitaire

Even though 2010 rings have more detail to them, the classic solitaire will never fade.  Whether it be 2000 or 2010, the best part of an engagement ring is the meaning behind it. I think the focus should never be solely on the ring. Yes, a diamond is amazing, but it is a symbol; your marriage is your life! Here is to making rings and marriages in 2010 the best yet!

Proposal Family Traditions

Recently, one of my family friends popped the question. Every year, our families celebrate Christmas together and this year he shared his oh- so- recent proposal. The part that stood out to me the most was that he bought TWO rings; what girl wouldn’t love two rings?  This immediately caught my attention, and I made him tell the whole story! Tanner and his mom explained the tradition they have in their family: you propose with a proposal ring selected by the groom and then the couple chooses the “official” engagement ring together! Debra, his mom, shared with me that her husband, Peter,  had done the same thing and it is something that her family passes on. She still has her proposal ring, which is a band of Peter’s birthstone gem…sapphire.  Tanner chose to buy a proposal ring with a pink tourmaline gem because that is his fiance Margot’s favorite color. Ahhhhh…sweet!

Tanner scheduled a romantic date with Margot, unaware that it was leading to something bigger! Throughout dinner, Tanner complained that his ankle was really hurting.  After dinner, they strolled down to a cute little boat for a ride in the Newport Beach Back Bay, Tanner complaining the entire way about his ankle. Tucked under his sock was a ring box in hiding. As he got down on one knee to rub his ankle and he pulled out the Margot’s ring instead!

This is such an amazing tradition that Tanner and Margot can pass onto their family. Now we know that most men cannot afford two rings but the sweetness was keeping a family tradition.  Men, we encourage you to always ask her family if there are any traditions that they want to pass on. Whether it be a ring, diamond, or a proposal tradition, it is always better to be in the know!
