You’ve been granted the lovely task of helping your friend, brother, or son propose to his soon-to-be fiancée. Now what? Chances are, you’ve done research and maybe even reached out to a proposal planner. If you’re looking for creative and romantic proposal ideas, along with the best marriage proposal tools to help with the big day, look no further! Here are the best tips on how to plan a marriage proposal!
1. Know your budget.
The number one thing to decide before any other proposal plans fall into place is budget. What are they willing to spend on the proposal (not including the ring?) Do they want to rent a private venue which can be costly, or stick to a semi-private or public location? Is photography the main focus, or are they willing to spend on décor? Knowing the budget and any preferences beforehand will help to guide you as to how to plan a marriage proposal and what will be the most important elements to focus on in the process.
2. Create a unique and romantic proposal idea.
You don’t have to spend hours browsing Pinterest to find the most creative proposal ideas. Our Marriage Proposal Survival Kit comes with an eBook to walk you through how to create a unique and romantic proposal idea that’s not cliché or the same as every other wedding proposal on the internet! Better yet, we’ve compiled our most-requested proposal ideas to give you inspiration, along with our tips and tricks to make the planning process as seamless as possible!
3. Come up with a ruse.
Once you have your idea in place, it’s time to figure out how to get the soon-t0-be fiancée to the proposal location! Our eBook can walk you through some of the most common ruses, or you can brainstorm an elaborate plan based on the location. We recommend ordering a Box Sock and Thin Ring Box (or even a beautiful PINK RING BOX) to conceal the ring leading up to the proposal, or it’s included in our Marriage Proposal Survival Kit.

4. Make sure the speech is ready to go!
This is a bit more personal, but it’s important to remind the proposer to prepare the speech ahead of time rather than waiting until the last minute. Just like with wedding vows, sitting down to write a marriage proposal speech can be a daunting task- but it doesn’t have to be! Using a Marriage Proposal Speech Template (like the one included in our Survival Kit) can make writing a romantic proposal speech as seamless as possible!
5. Send the timeline for the proposal to everyone involved.
If you’re hiring multiple vendors for the proposal (florist, photography, marry me letters, etc.) then the best way to coordinate all of the vendors and ensure they know exactly when to arrive and set up/ where to go on the day of is to put together a timeline and contact sheet so that everyone is working off the same information. Make sure to include the timing for when the future fiancés will arrive!
On the day of the proposal:
-Polish up the ring before putting it into the ring box. Chances are, it’s been handled quite a bit leading up to the proposal, so wiping away the fingerprints is ideal for the big reveal!
-Check the weather forecast. We mention all of the things to look out for while planning your proposal in our eBook, however even if you checked the weather forecast beforehand, make sure to double check it one more time before setting up (if the proposal will be outdoors).
-Touch base with all vendors involved to make sure they received the timeline, and ask if they have any questions regarding the set up.
