You’ll have to excuse my obsession with beach inspired blogs this week, but with summer approaching that means beach time to this California girl!  However, rather than a proposal I thought a cute anniversary idea was overdue. Just because you’re married or not yet engaged doesn’t mean we can’t participate in romantic, creative ideas. I love this anniversary idea because it is endearing, romantic, and not too cheesy.

Step 1) Find a spot on the beach that won’t be disturbed to set up votive candles. Ask your friends for a helping hand spelling out ” (Girl’s Name), I Love You!” Usually sending your gal off to a massage for an anniversary gift is a smart gesture to start your evening on a good note and it gives you time to set up.

Step 2) Plan a romantic boat ride off the coast. You can rent motor boats by the hour. If she is a music lover, having a great selection of her favorite songs to play during your boat ride and picnic dinner is a thoughtful touch. You can really use the time on the boat to incorporate a few of her favorite things. For example, a seafood dinner, bottle of chardonnay, flour-less chocolate cake, and a bouquet of dahlias quickly enhances the mood.

Step 3) When it’s just dark enough to see the candles perfectly lit, sail by the shore and wait to see her reaction when she sees “____, I Love You” glowing on the sand. Voila!

A Few Helpful Tips: I highly recommend using battery operated votive candles so they don’t blow out on the sand or cause potential harm to others. You can find these at Pier 1, Target, www.batteryoperatedcandles.net, etc. You will need about 8-10 candles per letter and each candle set is about $5.00.

Cost Breakdown: Dinner, Champagne & Dessert around $150, battery candles & flowers $150. For music, make the ipod playlist. Boat price varies depending on hours rented and location but average $90.00 per hour. If you’re on a tighter budget, you can set-up shop right on the beach and ditch the boat ride. There is nothing as romantic as an unexpected date night with your toes in the sand.
