Choosing what to wear to an engagement party can be difficult. The formality of these events can range from casual, semi-formal, to black-tie, making it a challenge to strike a balance between fancy and comfort. If you’re on the fence about what to wear, these seven tips can help you assemble the perfect look for any engagement party.

Check the venue

From five-star hotels, fancy restaurants, art galleries to private bars, beach resorts, and backyards, engagement parties can occur in any venue. If there’s no specific dress code, assess the venue beforehand. Check their website and social media accounts to get an idea of the clothes that best suit the place. Search for recent photos, so you can get inspiration from others who have attended celebrations held at that location.

Having chosen the venue will not only help with the dress-code ideas but will also dictate ideas for decoration. With outdoor events, you usually go classic with flowers, wooden arches, and big candles in votive holders or you might consider including some balloons, air dancers, event-customized inflatables that will make your decoration look complete. For the indoor event, you mainly go with classic decorations with some mood brightening small addictions.

Wear something comfortable

Even if it’s a formal party, you should select an outfit you’re comfortable in. There will be a lot of mingling involved, so choose clothes that won’t restrict your movements or make you excessively conscious. Opt for brands such as Dainty Jewells that offer high-quality yet affordable pieces to every type of woman.

Don’t wear white

Unless you’re the bride or otherwise instructed, avoid wearing white to an engagement party. Stay away from cream, off-white, champagne, pale pinks, and other usual bridal shades. White is usually reserved for the engaged couple, so leave your white ensemble at home.

Consider the time of the event

Most often, the time of the party determines the formality of your outfit. Daytime gatherings are usually less formal, unlike dinner events. For engagement dinners, wearing a suit for men is ideal, while women should go for long-length dresses. If the event will run from morning until night, it would be best to dress in layers to make the clothing transition easier.

Adhere to the dress code

Dressing according to the designated attire is a sign of respect to the guests of honor. If the invite states formal wear, do not show up in a summer dress, or if it’s casual, avoid dressing in a sparkly or silk slip-on mini. Remember that the engagement party is to celebrate the happy couple and not a chance for you to parade in an Instagram-worthy outfit.

Avoid underdressing or going overboard

If you’re a guest, stay away from clothes that could draw unnecessary attention. Steer clear from flashy outfits and clothes that are too laid back. Never assume that a beach party automatically calls for shorts and flip-flops. If you’re uncertain of your outfit’s suitability, make it a point to consult with your friends prior to the event.

Ask for help

When in doubt, the best recourse is to ask the engaged couple or the involved parties directly. Reach out to the people arranging the event, but make sure to do it a few days in advance. Asking the couple on the day of the event is one of the worst mistakes you could make as a guest.

Dressing up for an engagement party need not be complicated. Make sure to follow these tips and always err on the side of caution.
